Women: Economic Opportunity #1

The historical essay challenged businesses to recognise women’s influence without treating them as a single market.

The old question

The original essay opened with a challenge: why were companies only beginning to pay attention to women as buyers when women had long shaped household and business decisions? It argued that fear of alienating a supposed “mainstream” customer had sometimes pushed women and women of color to the edge of brand planning. The question remains a useful historical lens, though the old market estimates in the article cannot be treated as current data.

Influence is not uniform

The piece was especially concerned with women of color and the barriers that could hide their economic presence. A company looking at a national spending estimate might still miss the difference between local communities, generations, languages and categories. Listening to women’s experience is more useful than assuming a statistic explains how to design a product or conversation.

From recognition to practice

The 85% Niche connected this argument to concrete work: reconsidering positioning, product opportunities, advertising cues, store navigation and supplier relationships. That move from recognition to practice made the site more than a set of impressive numbers. Its central question was whether the brand experience changed after a business had listened.
